Composite 1st House Preponderance

The first house of the composite chart is one of the angular houses, which gives greater significance to any planet that is in it. Beyond that, however, the first house is the persona of a relationship and indicates the kind of impression it will make on its surroundings and how it will be viewed by others. It tells to what extent a couple will be regarded as a unit in their own right rather than as two separate individuals.

The first house resembles the tenth somewhat, but there is an important difference, in that the tenth represents the reality of what the relationship is to the outer world. The first house describes the impression the relationship gives rather than what it really is. A strong first house can be an indication of a relationship that is all show and no substance. The tenth more clearly indicates substance, at least from the standpoint of social significance. Nevertheless, a strong first house is usually a sign of a significant relationship that will have a great impact on the lives of those involved. If one were to cast the composite chart of two people who have just met to see if they would have a significant relationship beyond a chance encounter, one could not say on the basis of house occupancy alone, but with a strong first house, if the relationship does go beyond the initial meeting, it will be an important one.

Composite 2nd House Preponderance

The second house of the composite chart refers to values - what the two people value, and their relationship to what is valued. This can operate on two different planes. The 2nd house can indicate the role that value systems play in forming the relationship, that is, to what extent two people come together because they value similar things or ideas. If the 2nd house contains difficult aspects, particularly ones involving Pluto and Mars, disagreements over values may be a major source of conflict within the relationship. Similarly, positive aspects indicate that the couple has compatible values, which helps to bind the relationship together.

On another plane, clearly related to the first, the composite 2nd house refers to whatever finances and property there may be in the relationship. In reading the 2nd house, remember that not all relationships involve common property and finances. In that case only the first manifestation will have any relevance.

Needless to say, a badly afflicted composite 2nd house can mean exactly what it means in a natal chart - difficulties with money and finance. This may result from value conflicts in which the two people cannot agree on what to do with money and property. Or it may result from neither partner having any idea about what to do with money. In such a case, the individual's natal charts should be consulted.

One final note: In a composite chart all finances are joint finances, because you cannot clearly distinguish between which person is which, so one of the conventional distinctions between the 2nd house and the eighth has no meaning here. The 8th house has other meanings that have little to do with finances, but it is good to consult both the second and the eighth for information on all financial matters in a relationship.

Composite 3rd House Preponderance

The composite third house has essentially the same meanings as the third house in a conventional birthchart: communication, mind, routine day-to-day environment, and relatives. In the composite chart the communications aspect is especially important. If the people in a relationship cannot communicate, they are in real trouble. Very often in a close personal relationship, each partner expects the other to understand him or her on some deep, intuitive level that does not involve words. When the couple discovers that this deep understanding does not exist, they are most upset and hurt. An afflicted third house usually indicates lack of communication in some way. This should be watched for.

This matter is related to another problem. The third house is the house of the lower mind, that is, the mind in its routine day-to-day operation, usually on a low level of consciousness, involving habitual patterns of thought, unquestioned opinions, and unexamined notions. The composite third house tells a great deal about how these patterns will operate within the relationship. Will they constantly be a source of conflict, or will they be a source of compatibility, binding the relationship together? Very often they are a source of conflict. The only way to deal with these patterns is to have a neutral third party help bring them out into the light, because people are often not even aware of their own habitual attitudes.

A relationship with a strong third house usually comes about because of mental affinity. The two people are fond of talking with each other and exchanging ideas. Their only real problem arises in a close personal relationship, for mental exchange may become a substitute for a much needed deep emotional exchange. Otherwise, a third house relationship is perfectly fine.

Composite4th House Preponderance

The 4th House represents more than the home, especially in the composite chart. Many relationships have nothing that could be called a home, and yet the fourth house remains important.

First of all, it is one of the angular houses, which gives it added significance. But more fundamentally, the fourth house indicates the basic roots of a relationship - both literally, in geographic terms, and figuratively, in terms of mental and emotional background. The fourth house signifies the innermost depths of a relationship, which may be so far within as to be invisible at the surface.

The fourth house should be checked to see if there is an underlying compatibility between the two people. Do they have compatible backgrounds in the senses just described, and are their basic emotional and psychological characteristics compatible?

On top of this, the fourth house does mean collective "Home" if such a notion is appropriate. The home is where a couple's deepest emotional and psychological attitudes have their strongest impact. The home is in many ways the physical embodiment of one's innermost being, and is therefore influenced by anything that affects the inner life. Afflictions to the fourth house have a negative effect upon the home, if there is one, and upon the deepest levels of compatibility.

A composite chart with a strong fourth house usually indicates that the two people share their innermost lives and that they probably share their actual place of residence.

Composite5th House Preponderance

The 5th House in the composite chart has many of the same meanings that it has in a conventional chart - love affairs, children (where this is appropriate), creativity, self-expression, and so forth. The interpretation of self-expression, however, is especially critical in a composite chart.

The composite Fifth House represents, first of all, to what extent the relationship provides a setting for the individuals to be themselves in the most genuine and honest way possible. Many relationships survive only because each partner puts up a false front to the other. Each one tries to be what he or she thinks the other wants, rather than what he or she really is. When the truth becomes known and disillusionment sets in, such a relationship must collapse. The fifth house signifies the ability of the individuals to be real in each other's presence, which is not always easy. And being real should not be an effort. An ideal relationship allows each person to be real and feel that it is easy to do so. When the fifth house operates smoothly, it is easy to enjoy oneself with the other without feeling that something unnatural is expected. A badly aspected fifth house indicates the opposite.

A strong fifth house signifies a relationship that is very concerned with the issue of self-expression. In a fifth house relationship a couple is not together to form a team or a partnership, but because they enjoy being themselves in each others company and because they enjoy each other. For this reason. this is the house of love affairs and of friendships (which are also ruled by the eleventh house). But the very nature of this house means that it is not for people who are trying to operate as a single unit. In a fifth house relationship the two people are together but still individuals. For this reason it may not be the best house for a marriage, although it is not harmful to one. The staying power needed for a marriage or other long term partnership may not be provided by a purely fifth house relationship.

Composite 6th House Preponderance

The composite sixth house can signify real obstacles to a satisfactory personal relationship. Somewhat like the sixth house of a conventional horoscope, it refers to the duties and responsibilities that the relationship must fulfill. Of course, all relationships have obligations, and in most cases they are not likely to be harmful. Duties become a problem only when they are the major element of a relationship, with no room for necessary self-expression as ruled by the fifth house. When the sixth house is too strong, the two people see the relationship as a duty to be met, not something to be enjoyed. In a business relationship this is not a great problem; there are tasks to be done and obligations to be met. But in a personal relationship, which is supposed to be a voluntary and natural expression of each partner's self, such a dutiful attitude can ultimately weaken a relationship. Only if the circumstances call for work to be done does a strong sixth house become an advantage. To make good use of these energies requires that the two people approach even a personal relationship from a strong sense of personal duty.

Health, the other traditional meaning of the sixth house, seems to have little relevance to a composite chart, except as it may indicate a business or professional relationship relating to health.

Composite 7th House Preponderance

The composite seventh house, like the first, is a sign of a relationship in which the two people are truly trying to function as a unit. The seventh is the house of intimate one to one encounters. If a chart is on the whole favorable, a strong seventh house is a good indication that any kind of partnership, including marriage, can survive. A strong and well aspected seventh house is not absolutely necessary for a marriage or business partnership, but it helps. In a strong seventh house relationship, the two people are likely to think of themselves as one, as "we" and "us." It is not simply a matter of enjoying each other's company, as in a fifth house relationship. You should enjoy each other, but more important is the fact that you complement each other and make a strong whole.

A clearly seventh house relationship that is not well aspected will still be an intimate encounter, but the people may be enemies or at least competitors. This is because the seventh is also the house of one's open enemies.

Obviously a strong seventh house cannot guarantee a marriage between two people who love each other, but because you will think of yourselves as a unit, it is quite likely that you will get married or at least live together.

A stron seventh house chart is also favorable to any one to one relationship in which one person consults the other, such as a patient and doctor, patient and psychotherapist, client and lawyer, or client and any other type of professional. Needless to say, the seventh must be well aspected in these cases.

Composite 8th House Preponderance

In traditional astrology, one meaning of the eighth house has been joint finances and property, or the "partner's" finances and property. In a composite chart it is difficult to distinguish between the meanings of the second and the eighth house, because one cannot clearly distinguish between the two partners. One difference is that the eighth house can refer to finances and property of people outside the relationship. Otherwise it is difficult to separate the two houses, insofar as they both refer to value and things that are valued. The same issues can arise with both houses.

However, the eighth house also has quite a different meaning all its own. Traditionally it is the house of death, but this meaning is not limited to actual physical death. It really means the passing away of any old order and the building up of a new one. Therefore we refer to the eighth house as the house of major transformations.

A strong eighth house may signify some great involvement with property, but it is more likely to mean a relationship of great significance that will bring about major changes in the lives of the two people, especially at the psychological level. A strong eighth house relationship will very likely make a considerable impact on both partners.

Whenever you encounter a strong eighth house chart, be sure to keep in mind the double nature of this house. Its effects can be manifested at either level or both at once.

Composite 9th House Preponderance

The composite ninth house signifies the overall view of the world taken by the persons involved in a relationship. The phrase "consciousness-expanding" is often used in the delineations, because a ninth house relationship usually broadens the views of the two people. They are exposed to new ideas and forced to think in terms of a broader spectrum of possibilities than before.

Since the ninth is the house of ideas and consciousness, a strong ninth house enables people to communicate at a very high level. They can really understand each other and share their views with one another. Exchanging ideas plays a very important role in their relationship, and they will make more than the usual effort to understand each other. Of course, difficult aspects to this house, especially involving Saturn, can turn this around so that failure of communication becomes a major factor that weakens the relationship. Similarly, some planetary combinations, particularly Mars and Pluto, can create intense competition on the intellectual level and great resistance to each other's views. The one certainty is that a strong ninth house will make it very important that the two people have a strong intellectual relationship. If they do not, that fact will be a major source of difficulty between them.

Composite 10th House Preponderance

The tenth house in the composite chart has much the same significance that it has in the conventional natal chart. However, “career” seems to have little relevance for a relationship, unless it is a business or professional relationship. But even in an individual horoscope the tenth house has a much deeper meaning. It tells about a person’s development as an individual, a unique human being, and how he or she establishes that uniqueness in the world. Because of this, the tenth house refers to status and reputation. It also tells about the directions of a person’s evolution and principal occurrences of that process. All these matters apply in a compos chart, especially the uniqueness and evolutionary purpose of a relationship, both for the persons involved and for the outside world.

A strong tenth-house relationship will be more than normally concerned with directions. The two people will often ask. “What purpose does this serve in my life?” And often the encounter with each other will help them find out exactly what they are doing in this world.

A tenth-house relationship is not likely to be a professional one. Profession is only one aspect of life direction, and one that has been rather overemphasized. What one does for a living may have little or nothing do with the central purpose of one’s life, especially in a composite chart. Consciousness of objectives is the main theme. The issues of the tenth house are more than ideals and hopes, which are ruled by the eleventh. They are plans that will probably be realized, because they are the real intention the relationship.

Composite 11th House Preponderance

A strong eleventh house is very appropriate in a composite chart, for it is the house of friendship. It does not limit a relationship to a friendship, but it helps two people to be friendly in whatever they are doing together. This is especially important in a sexual relationship; lovers who have a strong eleventh house will also be friends. Businessmen or women with a strong eleventh will be friends as well as professional associates. A strong eleventh house is an excellent house for a marriage composite.

Because it is also the house of hopes and wishes, a good, well-aspected eleventh house gives a relationship a strong sense of shared ideals. Both persons are looking for the same things in life.

Difficult aspects, especially those of Saturn, may bring about conflicts of ideals in a relationship. Or friendship may be denied, limiting a relationship to a purely professional one or a purely sexual one, without friendship.

In any case, a couple with a strong eleventh house must be able to share with each other a great deal of their lives. Otherwise it is not likely to be a very successful relationship.

Composite 12th House Preponderance

The composite twelfth house has many of the same meanings as it has in an ordinary birthchart. However, as stated in the old texts, some of these are so cloudy that it is worthwhile to state them here in a new way.

Basically, the twelfth house represents repressed thoughts. It signifies once conscious ideas that have been eliminated from the waking mind because the mind has chosen not to deal with them. The twelfth also clearly indicates the environmental factors that has caused the thoughts to be repressed. These are the aspects of the twelfth house that have the most significance for the composite chart. The traditional meanings concerning hospitals, prisons, and other places of confinement do not really apply here.

The problem with repressed ideas is that they give rise to unconsciously motivated actions that are often harmful to an individual or to the relationship. Because the actions are automatic, they are often inappropriate to a given situation and serve to undo rather than aid the relationship.

In a strong twelfth house relationship, the persons involved do many things to and with each other that do not make sense in terms of what is really happening between them. As a result, they wind up dealing with behavior patterns automatically when they should be making a thorough, conscious evaluation of them. Even when a couple makes a great effort to deal with problems consciously and openly, there is often more going on that is raw, intimate, and heavily psychological than most people can deal with in a personal relationship.

If people can handle what comes up in a twelfth house relationships, fine, and some people even enjoy such a relationship. Marriage is not normally recommended for a couple with a very strong twelfth house. But there are those who benefit greatly from intense, day to day psychological encounters. And there are individuals whose unconscious actions - one is tempted to call them programs - dovetail with their partner's so perfectly that they are indispensable to each other, no matter how miserable they seem. For this reason, twelfth house relationships must be evaluated very carefully. They cannot be rejected out of hand, even though they are among the most difficult of all relationships.
